How to reach Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav

From Lower Parel on the Western Line:

Lalbaug is in Parel, a railway station on the Central Line. This is not to be confused with Lower Parel, which is on the Western Line. From the Western Line, you can get down at Lower Parel station and board a cab or take the bus. Of course, during the festivities, it will be difficult to get either. The walking distance from Lower Parel Station to Lalbaugcha Raja is approximately 1.9 kilometres. On festive days, for obvious reasons, getting a cab or even a bus would be difficult. Lalbaugcha Raja History

Lalbaugcha Raja, Mumbai’s most iconic Ganesh idol, was first established in 1934 by the local fishing and mill-working community. At the time, residents of Lalbaug lost their marketplace and prayed to Lord Ganesha for help. When their wish for a new permanent market was fulfilled, they installed the idol in gratitude. Since then, the Lalbaug Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal has managed the festival every year.

The idol, created by the Kambli family for decades, is famous as the “Navsacha Ganpati” – the wish-fulfilling Ganesha. Devotees believe their prayers come true here, leading to massive crowds during Ganesh Chaturthi. Lalbaugcha Raja’s majestic design has remained unchanged for decades, and millions of people, from commoners to celebrities, visit every year. Its grand immersion procession is one of Mumbai’s biggest cultural events, lasting over 24 hours.

Ganeshotsav is the most popular and loved festival in Mumbai and India, and countless devotees will throng the pandal and everywhere else. While the total time for travel and darshan is about 5 hours, be prepared to spend your entire day outdoors.
